Original Music

Twinkle Variations (Score) Orchestral.
Always fascinating what different composers make of the same source material. "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star".

This arrangement was  commissioned  by "The Learning Orchestra", an amateur orchestra, who tackle "proper" works such as Beethoven Symphonies. They gave it's first performance in September 2007.
Resolution "D" (Score) This is a Tony Take on a classical concert overture. Don't be fooled by the Classical opening This is a Tony Take on a classical concert overture. Don't be fooled by the Classical opening
Symphony No.11

Uses a largish orchestra with triple woodwind and Tubular Bells, with solo parts for Violin and Piano.

It's Finished at last 6th August 2002. 3 years or so of an on/off highly charged slog. Hope you like it?

The above is what I wrote all those years ago, it is November 2009 and it's currently being reviewed and orchestrated properly

Dompe's Journey Orchestral. However it uses Baroque type instrumentation. No clarinets or bassoons, but has organ, choir and harpsichord. (June 2001) Based around an olde English dance "My Lady Carey's Dompe". There are three movements:
  1. The Journey
  2. The Service
  3. The Flight
Henry's Company An orchestral work, using the same forces as "Dompe's Journey".(May 2002) Based around tunes, old and new. associated with Henry VIII.
Overlap 4 (Score) Wind Quartet (November 1999)

If you find "Kaleidoscope" a little hard on the ears, skip forward to "Tonal Tonic", .... surprised myself when I wrote that.

An experiment in harmony and wind textures. There are four movements.
  1. Kaleidoscope
  2. Fugato
  3. Choral
  4. Tonal Tonic
Mon (Score) Flute, Clarinet & Euphonium (August 2000)

(Why this configuration? Well... simply because these are the instruments her friends played)

This was commissioned by a friend (Jeanette) after hearing Overlap 4.

It's a musical portrait of her. She worked at "Oak Hall" in Kent. A Christian conference centre and holiday organiser. She did a lot of trips to Serbia as a leader and could report first hand on the plight of the refugees out there.

Punctuation (Score) Piano Solo (June 2002) Sit in a dark room, free your mind from its cell.
Don't call it in again 'till the last chord's farewell

It lasts five minutes and it's not over 'till the release of that very last chord

Kiddy Suite (Score) Piano Solo (1999) A Suite of seven pieces written for children of all ages to play. They are.

1. Five Finger Fun 2. Death of a Pet
3. Play-up Time 4. Ideal Piano
5. Angelic 6. Too Difficult Dad!!
7. Wandering Home
Headlong Solfeggietto (Score) Full Orchestra (September 2001) My response to September 11th. A lot of power leading to nothing.
Sonatina No.1 (Score) Piano Solo (November 2000)

Sonatina No.2 (Score) Piano Solo (5th May 2003) This, only took four hours to write. It's loosely based on the Clementi Sonatina structure and started off as a slightly jokey response to a juvenile request for Sonatas as a pre-requisite for world wide fame and adoration etc... Well...the muse was on me and this is the result.
Mixit (Score) Piano Solo (May 2001) A four movement experiment in piano sonorities. Starts experimentally, ends very firmly in A minor.
Instances (Score) An Orchestral Ballet (November 2001) Started off as an experiment, but it soon developed it into a substantial piece. It gravitates towards tonality and ends (more or less) in F.
Schubert's Toe Rag (Score) Piano Solo (July 2001) An "encore" piece which affectionately plays with some of Schubert's best tunes. Guest appearances from Beethoven, Mendelssohn and a Little Brown Jug
New Dawn 2 Flutes, S.A.B Choir. Piano and String Synthesizer. (November 1999) Written to be performed live at church on the first Sunday of the new Millennium.
Impossible (Score) Conventional Orchestra? (August 2002) It's called Impossible, because it was written to be impossible to play by conventional instruments.
Theanote Toccata (Score) Piano Solo (November 2002) In every bar where they be sound,
A is there in harmony bound.
Rex (Score) Cathedral Choir and Pipe Organ.

(Completed 1999, abandoned as a bad job and then re-evaluated and re-touched June 2003)

After writing New Dawn (in 1999), which was designed to be sung by a scratch singing group, I'd thought I'd try a "proper" choral piece. I imagined it being sung by an enthusiastic choir of top notch, virtuoso singers. (I can dream can't I). Thus I didn't hold back.
Layers (Five Colour Statements) (Score) Full Orchestra (October 2003) Started off an experiment in harmony and orchestration, however I think it works as a piece in its own right.

This piece has quarter tones in it. These are the notes in between those of the piano. However, string players can get them with ease, especially when they're first learning :-)

Happy Birthday Igor!! Full Orchestra (October 2003) No prizes for guessing the Rite piece it sprung on.
Birthday Thoughts (Score) Piano solo (October 2003)

(written to show to a group just what is possible with even the simplest tune and a little imagination)

Seven short pieces derived from the Tune "Happy Birthday". See the Score for their titles. It's there more than you think....

Sometimes obvious, Sometimes not,
Happy Birthday's chopped al lot

Overture to La Siemaylio (Score)

(Overture in the Classical Style)

Full Orchestra (October 2003)

Great fun to do, all the clichés I've been studiously avoiding have been used here abandon :-)

What the!!!??? I'd often wondered whether I didn't write in this style because I wouldn't or couldn't. So I did it. Might turn it into a symphony.

In classical times, if I were alive
This would be what I'd contrive.

Pam's Song (Score) This isn't a song, but a short (6 mins) orchestral work (2004) Written for an American lady called "Pam". She runs a Christian Message Board to which I contribute.
Manju (Score) Mixed Ensemble (1999)

Flute, Clarinet, Singer (Mezzo-Sop), Harp, Piano and String Quartet

I wrote this for a composing competition. The Britten Symphonia wanted some new works to play. Unfortunately they decide they didn't want this one.... Ho hum, such is life...
Tuba Chase (Score) Tuba and Piano (May 2004) This is a result of (Tubist?) David Carter requesting a Tuba work in one of the SibeliusMusic threads. It is a virtuoso work (i.e. probably un-playable) where my full knowledge of tuba writing and technique has been displayed for all to see. I play Piano.......
Mini-Me-List (Score) Orchestral (May 2004) This is my take on minimalism. It uses repeating patterns, which hardly ever (but do) vary, which are overlaid and introduced in various guises and orchestral colours.

I would be the first to say perhaps the result is too complicated to be true minimalism, however A minor pervades the entire piece even if it is not actually the home key of a particular passage. It's more like a symphonic minimalist poem.

The Lord's Prayer (Score)

Click here to hear this sung by Malcolm Donnelly. For a time a principle with the English National Opera.

Voice and Piano. (1984, yes... 1984)

(Oboe sounds used instead of voice as it sounds better.)

There are many settings of these words, this is my version. It always annoyed me that other versions end peacefully, when in fact the final words are an affirmation of triumph on the belief that God's glory will go on for ever and ever!.... Amen!
